For those that cannot remember a time without smart phones and calendar apps, we use to have the ‘My-Time Success Planner’. It was a mini-notebook that provided monthly calendars and pages for planning each day. It was great for managing time, recording meeting notes and logging action to be taken. Of course, you had to remember to take the planner with you wherever you went.

These days I am glad there is a smart watch that reminds me where I left my smart phone that will remind me ...read on

In the military, a soldier progresses through the ranks as a function of rigorous training, testing and battlefield experience. An officer of a higher rank commands respect from those of a lower rank and a battalion will follow its leader through harm’s way. Well trained and developed leaders are good examples to follow.

Similarly, kids mature through the ranks of ...read on

What do you worship? “Worship sex and it will corrode your ability to love or be loved. Worship alcohol and it will ensnare you. Worship money and it will consume you. Worship your family and you (or they) will collapse under the burden of unfulfilled expectations. Worship any substitute god and you will find that it cannot satisfy.” (Alistair Begg, Truth for Life devotion).

Substitute gods can sneak in on you. Out of a sincere desire to ...read on

As young families transition to their back-to-school routine, I have had a number of dads say it is harder than ever to establish a good life-balance. “It is absolutely insane with all the kids’ activities and my wife and I working full-time. We have not eaten dinner as a family this month!” He also said that technology and the hybrid model of working remote with two to three days in-office a week has blurred the lines between work and home.

Life is not about balance. It is about ...read on

What book or books can you point to as having significant impact on your life? Is it a book read early on in your education or one read as you sought greater success in the market place or on the career ladder? Who recommended the book to you?

Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich has been described as the “Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature” in several book reviews. It is the ...read on

Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rithmetic are the three R’s of education that most parents think of as school starts back up. But there are three more R’s to be practiced in the home that are foundational for the education of the next generation. George Will documented years ago in, “The 9/91 Factor,” that kids spend only 9% of their time from birth to 18 in school and 91% elsewhere. School simply supplements what kids are learning “elsewhere”.
As the primary educators in their children’s lives, dads and moms are ...read on

Were you in the room when your first child was born? For many, myself included, that became a moment of emotional and spiritual awakening to the significance of the role of a father. One moment my heart burst with pride and the next it ached with the realization of how ill-prepared I was to raise a child that I could hold in the palm of my hand.

In his book, Heart of a Father, Dr. Ken Canfield opens with ...read on

When did you become a man? Was there a particular time or event at which you recognized that you had indeed moved from boyhood to manhood? Maybe it was graduation from high school or bootcamp; getting your license or getting married. Or are you one of the rare men who was raised by a dad that provided a clear understanding of what being a man was all about and knighted you into manhood in your late teens?

Robert Lewis provides a beautiful picture of ...read on

As the man of the house, it is my job to ensure that ants, roaches and spiders stay outside. This requires periodic treatment of a concentrate around the foundation of the house and the window sills. In our area, depending on rain, treatment every six to eight weeks keep the pests subdued.

The job does not call for ...read on

Well, it is time to put a wrap on summer unless you live in Houston – then you know we have a couple more months to enjoy the heat and humidity. But high school football practice starting and marching bands in the parking lots are markers for the end of summer. I hope you have made some memories this summer as a family – maybe a special trip, a fishing outing or a summer camping experience.

Before you get back into the hustle & bustle of school and extra-curricular activities, I encourage you to ...read on
