What is the point? Several years ago, I called a friend and caught him at the hospital undergoing a round of chemotherapy. I asked him how he was doing and he said, “Well, now I know why I got the cancer. My nurse doesn’t know Jesus and the Lord has me here to talk with her.” He was on point. This was the theme folks shared throughout Jesse’s funeral service recently – a lifelong commitment of sharing the love of Jesus with family, friends and strangers. His battle with liver cancer these last five years was simply another platform for him to share the love of Christ in a powerful way.

In a show, be it television or theater, when an actor deviates from the script, the director will promptly stop the action and remind him that it is critical to stay on script for the show to be successful. If the individual insists on following his own script, it takes the show into unchartered territory and disrupts critical cues for the other actors.

In life, one’s script is

Great missionaries include the likes of Eric Liddell. While most often thought of as the wonderful athlete depicted in the movie, “Chariots of Fire”, the untold story is his work as a missionary in China. He ignored the media’s hero worship after the 1924 Olympic games and returned to China in 1925, where he had been born, to continue his family’s missionary work.

One definition for a missionary is ...read on

Where does your encouragement come from? Establishing core groups of dads in churches that meet together regularly has been foundational for the mission of our ministry – to encourage and equip dads to be faithful fathers. And being a part of several of those groups has provided personal encouragement to me over what is now twenty-plus years of ministry.

The writer of Hebrews said ...read on

Who spurs you on each day? For me it is primarily my bride. She was a cheerleader when we met in junior college so it was natural for her to be my cheerleader for life when we married several years later. And that she has been. As we celebrate forty years of marriage this week, I praise God for the way she spurs me on daily to become the man, husband and father the Lord calls me to be, and that she expects me to be.

The writer of Hebrews spurs the believers on in this way ...read on

I had a car in high school that was a battle buddy car. I bought the car for a grand total of $100 in 1973 and quickly learned how to install brake pads, rebuild the carburetor, replace plugs, points and the condenser, tune the engine and trouble shoot the trifecta of the starter, battery and alternator. It was one of those three, the starter, battery or alternator that would inevitably fail on ...read on

What is spiritual warfare? For the prophet Elisha it looked like this – “Now the king of Aram … sent horses and chariots and a strong force to capture Elisha in Dothan. And Elisha’s servant said to him, ‘Alas, my master! What shall we do?’ Elisha answered, ‘Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the ...read on

In Acts 9, Saul is on his way to Damascus to capture those that follow the Way and bring them back to Jerusalem for punishment when he gets knocked down. Scripture documents the event like this – “…suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; and he fell to the ground and heard a voice ...read on

The consistent encouragement to pray for our kids has resulted in some of the most powerful feedback received from dads over our 20 years of ministry. Stories of relationships restored, wayward children returning, comfort in times of trial and safety in the face of danger have affirmed how important it is to pray always.

One great church that Faithful Fathering has been blessed to work with the past number of years, Memorial Church of Christ in Houston has taken their prayer initiative to a new level as dads and families prepare for returning to school in strange times ...read on

Commitment is the topic for this final week of the DadsHeroChallenge. Commitment is the single biggest determinant of a dad’s effectiveness as a father. We have covered the significance of being nurturing, consistent, involved and aware. Now the rubber meets the road with your willingness to commit to taking a step forward in your walk as a father.

One dad asked if he needed to commit to more quality time or quantity time ...read on
