As has been, and continues to be for so many, several feet of water invaded his home for a number of days courtesy of hurricane Harvey. When the water receded enough to enter the house, here they came. Some were friends and some were complete strangers stepping up to get the soggy furniture out of his home and begin removing the sheetrock and insulation. Large military trucks and boats were bringing more volunteers to his neighborhood to offer help with the cleanup efforts. In the midst of widespread devastation, the love of Christ is shining through.

Opportunities abound across southeast Texas for all to live out their faith in service to others. All able-bodied men certainly should step up as we are called to do some of the ‘heavy lifting’ in environments that our kids should not be exposed to. I also encourage you to look for opportunities to serve beside your wife and kids be it volunteering for a shift at George R. Brown Convention Center or NRG Arena. There are also a number of churches in the area housing organizations that are setting up shop for a sustained recovery initiative. Do the due diligence to step into those opportunities individually and as a family.

As the body without the Spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. – James 2:26. The aftermath of hurricane Harvey is proof that the Spirit is alive and well in the bodies of many across the state of Texas, throughout this country and beyond. Relationship with Jesus the Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit manifests into good deeds.
I know everyone in the Houston metroplex has a relative or friend that has been impacted by Harvey. One way the Lord will be glorified through this storm is in the relationships established across all lines. The best news over the last couple of weeks has been the exhibition of His unconditional love through the physical, emotional and spiritual support extended with no reference to political affiliation, socio-economic status or skin color. All the other “issues of the day” were put into perspective when disaster struck. I pray this proper perspective continues through the coming weeks and months and radiates throughout this one nation under God.

Prayer guide: Thank You Lord for Your wakeup calls. I tend to question You in the midst of storms be they natural or man-made. Forgive me. I know You are sovereign and will be glorified in ways I cannot comprehend. Grant me strength through these times to live out my faith in You in ways that are contagious in the marriage and family You have blessed me with; in my neighborhood and church community; across the city and surrounding areas; across the state of Texas and beyond. Thank You Lord for the many gifts and blessings in my life. I count them daily with renewed vigor and will not take them for granted again. Amen.

A faithful father steps into works as a reflection of his relationship with Christ.
