Pastor Tony Evans delivered a powerful message to us men on the Mall, October 4th, 1997 in Washington D.C. The event was Promise Keepers’ “Stand in the Gap”. He spoke of how a “messed up man will produce a messed up family that will produce a messed up church that will result with a messed up neighborhood that will cause a messed up city that will bring about a messed up county that will result in a messed up state that will reside in a messed up country that will bring about a messed up world! So if we want a better world, to be composed of better countries inhabited by better states made up of better counties that are composed of better cities inhabited by better neighborhoods, illumined by better churches, made up of better families, we got to go home better men!”

Men left the Mall with a call to be better in the home, to identify and rebuke distractions that suggest priorities should be elsewhere than on relationship with the Lord, in marriage and in the home. Yes, men are to provide but they are also to proclaim, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

Be Better: “After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, ‘Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, Who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.’” – Nehemiah 4:14. Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the men of Ashdod were very angry that the Israelites had continued the rebuilding of the wall. They stirred up fear, doubt and frustration among the laborers. Nehemiah saw how the enemy was trying to mess up the minds of his workers. He knew if their minds were messed up, their work would be messed up and the project would be messed up. Then Jerusalem would stay messed up and the Israelites would continue to be messed up. But Nehemiah was under the influence of God, not the enemy. His mind was clear and he issued a challenge to fight for what he knew was right, fight for family. They indeed stayed on task, committed to be better men for the sake of their families.

There is a good bit of fear, doubt and frustration in families, churches and communities today. The enemy is always working to mess with the minds of men. Listen to a modern day Nehemiah, Tony Evans’ message on the Mall in 1997, and commit to be a better man today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today.

Prayer guide: Lord, thank You for Nehemiah’s example. And thank You for men like Tony Evans and others, that through such passion for You and Your word have planted seeds across this nation in men that will commit to be better men for You, for marriage and family. Help me tune out the fear, doubt and frustration that messes up the work You want to do through me. Embolden me to fight for my marriage and family, to be the Christian man You expect me to be. Amen.

A faithful father strives to be a better Christian man today than yesterday.
