In Houston, Texas, Center Point Energy has been under fire as over 2.5 million homes in the greater Houston area lost electricity during Hurricane Beryl. As we entered the four-day mark there were still over a million homes without power. The connection to the power source was interrupted as severe weather downed powerlines.

This is in contrast to the challenges faced in the freeze of 2020 when ERCOT was under fire. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) schedules power on an electric grid that connects more than 54,100 miles of transmission lines and 1250 generation units. During the freeze, wind power generation was severely impeded and backup power plants were not adequately prepared to offset the power lost. The power source was unreliable when severe weather hit.

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. – Acts 2:2-4. The disciples had been connected to their Power Source every day as they walked with Jesus the Christ. He had granted them power to heal the sick and cast out demons when He sent them out in twos (Matthew 10 & Luke 10). Their relationship with Jesus provided the direct connection to the Power Source. When betrayed, He was taken from them and killed on the cross. They were without Power for three very dark days. Then He appeared and stood among them. He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”- John 20:22. After appearing to many, He ascended to Heaven returning to His Father. The disciples were in the dark again until Pentecost. As the tongues of fire landed on them, connection to the power of the resurrected Christ was complete with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Power can never be taken for granted. Dark days are opportunities to recognize disconnect and realize the Power Source is always reliable. It is dad’s responsibility to stay connected through prayer, Scripture, worship and study of God’s word to lead his family through the storms of life.

In the home, dads want to make sure the power source is reliable and that the connection to the source is not interrupted. We will even purchase a generator to provide backup just in case. Mechanically, dads work hard to keep the power on. Spiritually, the same intentionality is needed for a dad to help the kids know the true Power Source and provide the connection through his example. Leading spiritually by example is walking in the power of the resurrected Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer guide: Lord, thank You for Your word and Your patience with me. I confess I get frustrated when my power is interrupted. I should use the time to focus on You as the only truly reliable Power Source. Forgive me. Help me move from relying on worldly power to being under Your will and relying on Your power. I want to lead my family spiritually by example in the power of the resurrected You and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. I commit to staying connected through time in prayer, Scripture, worship and study. That is the dad You call me to be and that is the dad my kids need to see. Amen.
A faithful father stays connected to the Power Source.

I found this Dad Talk and these times interesting. More importantly, I do pray for all those in the Houston area who are trying to either get power or get back to normal or both.
