It was a typical birthday party for a five-year old. There was cake, lots of balloons and lots of little friends running around. Then grandpa got the birthday girl’s attention for a few moments and asked her a question, “What do you remember about your very first birthday, the day you were born?”

Yes, Easter is a day we celebrated a couple of weeks ago, the most significant day of the Christian faith. Easter is also a season, from Jesus’ resurrection through Pentecost. And Easter is a state of mind, an understanding of how Christians are to live in this world while not being of this world. Having an Easter state of mind is standing firm against cultural winds.

Leading by example is the best means of ...read on

The young man had battled cancer for years. Originally, the cancer was thought to be confined to the bladder so the bladder was removed. The surgery was successful and it seemed the cancer had been beaten. A battle was won but the war continued when the cancer returned. On the Monday after Easter, eternal victory was realized as he joined his risen Lord in glory.

The father-son relationship had suffered disconnect for fifteen years when the young man was convicted to reconnect with his dad. He realized he had judged a man he had no right to judge back when he was a teenager. His dad had been a combat war veteran and suffered significant trauma as a fighter pilot in World War II. Today it is called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But in his day, men dealt with it by self-medicating with alcohol or drugs. The collateral damage was significant.

In the world of adoption, the adoptive parents and the birth mother have expectations in their respective roles for what is best for a child. Neither typically have a comprehensive understanding of, nor are they prepared for the trauma incurred when a child is separated from the birth mother.

In the world of Christianity, all are adoptees into the ...read on

He was suffering from some inflammation in his knees but thought it just the natural progression from years on the athletic fields. The doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory medication for the short term and proposed surgery as the solution. A nutritionist suggested evaluating dietary in-take, specifically inflammatory staples such as dairy products, corn and pasta, food he enjoyed often.

In C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Aslan reveals what is good about Friday - “It means,” said Aslan, “that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of Time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards.”

Good Friday is ...read on

Jesus was very aware that not all the people listening to His teaching had the capacity to hear what He was saying, or see what He was pointing to. But the miracles they witnessed! From the first recorded miracle of His turning water to wine, to His resurrection and ascension, it became clear that He was Who He said He was.

Have your kids ever been scared of the dark? Did you put a night-light of some kind in their room to provide a degree of comfort? We certainly did. It is amazing how just a little bit of light in a dark room can provide a child enough peace of mind to settle down for a good night’s rest.

As kids get older, the darkness that impedes their peace and rest requires more than a night light. It calls for ...read on

Jesus spoke often in parables that would point to Himself, to His Father and to His mission. In turn, His disciples would ask Him to explain the parable. It seems it was in these intimate discussions around parables that the disciples began to “get” Jesus and His mission in this world.

During the Lenten season, many churches encourage fasting, all are to give something up. I like to encourage dads to ...read on
